I wanted to create an additional asset for a mission driven organization that made an impactful difference on the planet.
I was first introduced to Mission Blue through a documentary I had seen. I dove into the website and learned about their mission to reduce the exploitation of our oceans and create Hope Spots in order to spur biological development in the ocean.
Its current touch points are the documentary titled Mission Blue and its website. I began considering how to capture the attention of a demographic that was not going to find them through a documentary or through its website. Given the effectiveness of infographics in telling stories, I chose to create an interactive motion infographic that would attract the millennial generation that is not as willing as older generations to sit through a 100 minute documentary or read through a content saturated website.
Web designer, Web developer, Content developer.
I created a timeline of the ocean that illustrated the devastation of its resources over the last 50 years.
I began by conducting research on motivational factors, mobile use, website use and trending brands for the millennial generation.
Based on the information I gathered, I chose to create a timeline based on decades that would make the user actively participate in the depletion of the oceans resources. I began researching key events throughout the decades that affected the ocean.
Once I had gathered the content, I began to build this interactive timeline by scratch. With my limited knowledge in coding, I dove head deep into learning how to code different functions. I learned new techniques and commands that allowed me to create a customized interactive interface that was informative and impactful.
However, this was not a walk in the park. Yet, after multiple renditions, errors, mistakes and glitches I was successful in creating an interactive touchpoint.
I knew that this was the best solution based on my research and therefore, in order to produce an effective end product, I would have to challenge myself to learn, not only new content, but new skills.
While this caused this project to take more time than I would have liked, I learned a lot and achieved my first real breakthrough in coding.
